ORIGIN

Cacao Criollo

The origin of the cultivation of Creole or Venezuelan cocoa was determined from the discovery made by Hispanics of the groves planted by indigenous people in Maruma, south of Lake Maracaibo. It is believed that its consumption became widespread since the end of the 16th century due to the existence of a document dated 1579 that reviews the fruit coming from Mérida and exported through Lake Maracaibo.

The oldest news, until now known, about the presence of cocoa, is offered by the merchant Galeotto Cey, who toured part of western Venezuela between 1549 and 1554, describing how cocoa trees grew wild.

THE AREA

El Sur del Lago.

Lago de Maracaibo. Sur del Lago was not only the place where providence ordered the first Criollo cocoa seed to be born, also known as “extra-fine cocoa”, but it is also the place where it grows best.

Today Sur del Lago has more than 5,100 hectares of cocoa planted throughout various farms and haciendas, from which a production of 3,800 tons per year is derived.

The south of the lake has a Germplasm Bank of 15 hectares of Criollo Porcelain Cacao, unique in the world and 1.5 hectares of Guasare Criollo Cacao and 1 hectare of Criollo cocoas collected in the states of Zulia and Táchira under the Corpozulia reservation. This bank, as well as the nursery with a capacity of one million seedlings per year, will increase seed production in the area for cocoa producers.
